As countries and governments are easing the lockdown restrictions, new news is speeding up with an impressive pace:
#blacklivesmatter movement alongside with fears of a
second wave of the pandemic and a threat of a stronger than ever
economic crisis.
Amongst this,
an impressive number of big corporations and smaller companies are committing to unprecedented measures to drive their sustainability forward:
Unilever pledges an impressive €1bn to reduce climate-change impact in its processes and plans to become 100% carbon 0 by 2039, whereas
L'Oreal is planning to spend €150 mln to support women's rights, restore damaged eco-systems or invest in circular economy solutions, and
Kering hires Emma Watson (not just a famous actress most known for Hermione role in the Harry Potter movies, but also a well-know female rights activist and circular fashion advocate) as a member of its Board of Directors. These are just a few examples out there.
Why is it so particularly important now? Because it is right now, during this post-pandemic phase that companies and businesses are rethinking and reshaping their business models, and
strategic decisions taken during the 6 months to come will be shaping the future years that are crucial for preventing irreversible climate change, according to scientists. It is also now that governments need to take action to adopt new green policies rather than investing in getting back "business as usual".
On June 15th, 31 NGOs and business groups including the International Chamber of Commerce, WWF, We Mean Business, United Nations Global Compact, the IUCN and Business for Nature published
a letter calling on CEOs to push governments to include ambitious policies to reverse nature loss as part of green recovery plans. These
Green Recovery plans mean not only additional money invested but also creating
additional businesses, jobs, and value. Today, this letter is being signed by about 400 companies all over the world, and the call for signatures is open until July 31st.
Here, you can find more information about this important action.
How can you act? Sharing this information and encouraging your company to sign the letter is one the best commitments you can do today for a better tomorrow :).
